Draw by Reputation
In round five, the mighty Mephisto by Richard Lang played Échec 1.9 by Marc-François Baudot and Jean-Christophe Weill, and around move 23 the Mephisto team were clearly getting desperate and beginning to envisage the horrifying prospect of losing a lot of prestige - and maybe even the world champion title. Just a few moves later, with Mephisto the exchange down and showing an evaluation of -2, Échec began to repeat moves, and a draw by repetition was fixed on move 32. The explanation was the amateurs had set their contempt factor to no less than four Pawns. As Mike Valvo remarked in the bulletin: this particular draw by repetition might better be labeled a draw by reputation [6]. [7]
