The University of Edinburgh,
in Edinburgh, Scotland, is one of Scotland's ancient universities, founded in 1582. The Research Excellence Framework, a research ranking used by the UK government to determine future research funding, ranked Edinburgh 4th in the UK for research power, with Computer Science and Informatics ranking 1st in the UK [2]. Donald Michie was head of the University of Edinburgh's Department of Machine Intelligence from 1965 until 1985 [3] , when he left to found the Turing Institute in Glasgow [4].
