There are certain typical positions which tend to require additional knowledge, matching pattern of piece or pawn interactions. A couple of examples:
- Fianchetto (once a bishop is fianchettoed, it is generally undesirable to exchange it, especially when it is a part of king's defensive formation)
- Outposts
- Returning Bishop
- Against the Stonewall or Slav formations it is undesirable to play c4-c5 (such code can be found in Phalanx)
