Attention, maybe. The chess programs are a pure hobby business. It is interesting to do them because it requires that you know something about chess and know something about computers. Characteristic of my programs is that they imply a greater knowledge of computers than of chess. This is probably why I am now in the position that I have achieved a program that I can no longer beat myself.

Rooks have Returned [1]

Rook,
a chess program by Lars Karlsson written in Z80 assembly for the Data Board 4680 card computer [2] [3] and subsequently the ABC 80, produced by Dataindustrier AB, the company founded in 1970 by Karlsson himself [4]. Rook is a typical Shannon Type A program, performing Alpha-Beta with focus on the Killer heuristic. With respectful 3 out of 5 and a shared third place Rook 4.0 had its strong debut at the WMCCC 1980 in London. During the 1981 CeBIT fair in Hanover, Germany, where Boris Spassky gave a simultaneous exhibition, one participant was Rook 4.5, which lost its game like most others of 25, except three who drew [5].

from an interview in MikroDatorn, January 1981 [6]

What have you earned from your chess programs?
Attention, maybe. The chess programs are a pure hobby business. It is interesting to do them because it requires that you know something about chess and know something about computers. Characteristic of my programs is that they imply a greater knowledge of computers than of chess. This is probably why I am now in the position that I have achieved a program that I can no longer beat myself.
