Pawn, (♙)
the smallest and initially weakest chess man, restricted to move only one empty square forward, or to control and capture one square diagonally forward. A pawn on its original second (White) or seventh (Black) rank may push two empty squares forward, but may immediately captured en passant if that double push crosses a square conrolled by an opponent pawn. A pawn arriving to its final rank promotes - most often to a queen, rarely to a rook, bishop or knight.
