Samiel and Caspar [1]

Samiel,
a mainframe chess program written in 1972 by Eberhard Klein and M. Krüger as subject of their diplom thesis at Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung mbH, Bonn. The program was designed to recognize typical middlegame combinations, extended by a database of classical openings. Samiel played the First GI Computer Chess Tournament 1975, where it ran on a IBM370/168 [2].
