While affiliated with McGill as student of Monroe Newborn, he began chess programming in 1976 as a class project . His program dubbed L'Excentrique ran on Amdahl mainframe computers , at the WCCC 1980 in Linz with the first round victory versus Chess 4.9, becoming strong fourth .
