the smallest and initially weakest chess man, restricted to move only one empty square forward, or to control and capture one square diagonally forward. A pawn on its original second (White) or seventh (Black) rank may push two empty squares forward, but may immediately captured [[En passant|en passant]] if that [[Pawn Push#DoublePush|double push]] crosses a square conrolled by an opponent pawn. A pawn arriving to its final rank [[Promotions|promotes]] - most often to a [[Queen|queen]], rarely to a [[Rook|rook]], [[Bishop|bishop]] or [[KightKnight|knight]].
