In 2008, Waxman became [[Chess Engine Communication Protocol]] compatible <ref>[http://www.waxman2008.com/waxman.html WAXMAN | WinBoard Chess Engine by Ivan Bacigal]</ref>.
The program uses [[10x12 Board|10x12 board representation]], [[Incremental Updates|incremental attack updates]], [[Alpha-Beta|alpha-beta]] search with [[Iterative Deepening|iterative deepening]], [[Aspiration Windows|aspiration window]], [[Killer Move|killer moves]] and [[Refutation Move|refutation moves]], [[History Heuristic|history heuristic]] - all pretty cutting-edge back in 1990.
Later on, Ivan Bacigal added [[Null Move Pruning|null move pruning]] and tried several types of [[Futility Pruning|futility pruning]]. The newer WinBoard versions also use [[Internal Iterative Deepening|internal iterative deepening]] and [[Late Move Reductions|late move reductions]], and since 2017 [[Tapered Eval|tapered evaluation]] <ref>[http://www.waxman2008.com/whatsnew.html WAXMAN | WinBoard Chess Engine by Ivan Bacigal - What's New?]</ref>.
Waxman's name resembles the Russian word for chess [http://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A8%D0%B0%D1%85%D0%BC%D0%B0%D1%82 Шахмат], while its original name was VaxMan, an attempt to camouflage the program as a [[Digital Equipment Corporation|DEC]] [[VAX]] management utility <ref>[http://www.waxman2008.com/qa.html WAXMAN | WinBoard Chess Engine by Ivan Bacigal - Q & A]</ref>.
