Prologue

There were no American participants due to a boycott caused by Chrilly Donninger's hatred e-mails to American computer chess programmers to protest against the Iraq War, which began on March 20, 2003 with the United States-led invasion [10].

List Disqualification

List was not represented by Fritz Reul, but by book author Erdogan Günes. Fritz, probably not aware of the ICGA rules and with examination commitments, could not act appropriate to prove his program was not a clone, as accused by an official protest during the tournament. As a consequence, List was disqualified after eight of eleven rounds [11] . With hindsight Fritz Reul was fully rehabilitated by the ICGA [12] in 2005:

Cancellation of Suspension

During the 2003 World Computer Chess Championship in Graz, it was unfortunately necessary for the ICGA to disqualify one of the participants, Fritz Reul, and to impose a suspension on him from taking part in ICGA events. This was because Mr. Reul did not respond positively to a request by the tournament committee to submit his program code for inspection, as required by the ICGA tournament rules.

We are now pleased to announce that Mr Reul has since submitted his program code to the scrutiny of an expert approved by the ICGA tournament committee and that this expert has declared Mr. Reul’s code to be completely above board, with no sign of any copying of code from other known programs. Furthermore Mr. Reul has submitted to the ICGA an apology for what happened in 2003 (see above). The ICGA tournament committee has therefore decided unanimously to lift the suspension on Mr. Reul with immediate effect and to welcome him back for participation in future ICGA events. Shredder - Jonny

Honorable sportsmanship intended, Johannes Zwanzger was subject of a difficult and controversial TD-decision. In the last round game, Shredder versus Jonny, Shredder had a winning position, already about to announce mate in X. There would nothing wrong for Johannes to resign on behalf of Jonny. Apparently due to a bug, Shredder allowed a threefold repetition, still high plus score. Johannes, while his engine had a zero score, and the external GUI a "Threefold repetition" Infobox popped up, decided that Info is no draw-claim and continued the game by making the move over the board. TD Jaap van den Herik first miss understood, assuming Johannes would claim a draw rather than asking to continue [13] [14] .
