Nicu Ionita,
an Austrian computer scientist, open source and chess programmer, who shortly after he discovered the world of chess engines, begun to work on his own engine in purely functional programming. He is now author of the UCI compliant open source chess engines Abulafia [2] and Barbarossa [3], and of chessNet to connect chess engines to an UCI compatible GUI via TCP/IP [4], all written in Haskell.
