Digital Equipment Corporation, (DEC)
was a major American company in the computer industry from the 1950s to the 1990s, headquarters located in Maynard, Massachusetts, best known for their successful Programmed Data Processor (PDP), and the Virtual Address eXtension(VAX) computers, as well as the DEC Alpha processor. DEC was acquired in June 1998 by Compaq, which subsequently merged with Hewlett-Packard (HP) in May 2002. Some parts of DEC, notably the compiler business, were sold to Intel [2].
