The First International Chess-Computer Tournament in the USSR,
held simultaneously with the human qualification tournament of the World Cup, May 16-28, 1989 in Moscow, USSR, sponsored by Hegener & Glaser. There was also an exhibition of Mephisto chess computers, with more than 100 machines shown in the Izmailovo cinema and concert hall [2] to play Soviet chess amateurs. The chess-computer tournament was organized by the Chess-Programming Association (CPA) of the USSR. Five Soviet participants, two PC programs, Centaur and Algir, and three Soviet dedicated chess computers competed with three Mephisto models with programs by Richard Lang (Mephisto Almeria [3] ), Ed Schröder (Mephisto München IV [4] ) and Frans Morsch (Mephisto Europa [5] ). Finally, the Almeria won the tournament, followed by the MM IV and Centaur.
